Senate 2008 Guru: Following the Races

Keeping a close eye on developments in the 2008 U.S. Senate races

Thursday, September 13, 2007

Thursday Quick Hits

  • Virginia: What has been the immediate reaction to popular former Governor Mark Warner's entry into the 2008 Senate race? CQPolitics shifted its rating of the Virginia Senate race from "No Clear Favorite" to "Leans Democratic." Also, numerous pundits are already calling the race for Mark Warner. Oh, and in case there was any doubt, George "Macaca" Allen re-iterates that he will not run for Senate in 2008.

  • Colorado: Republican Senate aspirant Wayne Wolf has officially entered the race and has pledged a positive primary campaign against Backwards Bob Schaffer. How long before Schaffer and Tricky Dick Wadhams go unnecessarily negative and just embarrass themselves?

  • North Carolina: Blue NC further studies the possibility of State Representative and Afghanistan War veteran Grier Martin taking on Elizabeth Dole. Also, Forsyth County commissioner Ted Kaplan has announced that he will not run for Senate in 2008. So, all eyes are on Representative Martin.

  • Kentucky: Apparently, Mitch McConnell thinks attention to Iraq and maintaining oversight over elected officials are "obsessions" and somehow bad things. I guess Mitch McConnell is the pro-corruption, anti-planning-ahead candidate, then. (HT: DMKY)

  • Nebraska: Want to see how the NE-GOP pays tribute to Chuck Hagel?

  • Stu Rothenberg asks, "In 2008 election cycle, how bad is bad for Senate Republicans?" He answers that, "a Democratic gain of five to seven seats [is] a serious possibility next year" and that "for now, Democrats have every reason to hope for — and Republicans to fear — another terrific Democratic Senate year."

  • Ditch Mitch KY raises a very good point. Will every elected official, candidate, and pundit who denounced MoveOn.org's ad questioning the honesty and accuracy of General Petraeus' report now call on Admiral William Fallon, the Chief of CENTCOM and Petraeus’ supervisor, to resign for denigrating Petraeus' character and integrity? What say you, John Cornyn and Jim Bunning?

It'll get worse for the VA blogger (a misnomer, I think... I've seen no evidence that he or she actually has a blog) when the Dems take the VA Senate this year and the House in 2009---under Governor Moran.

Josh, as I mentioned various times on this site, my job prevents me from operating a blog. Since I value my profession over the opinions of anonymous people on the Internet, I choose to follow those rules.

As for Virginia in 2009, I was simply going to say "We'll wait and see", but you've got to be kidding if you think there's a chance in hell Brian Moran is elected Governor. I think Jim Gilmore has a better shot of getting elected to the Senate than that.

    VA blogger,

That's too bad that you can't have your own blog but you CAN leave comments under a name.

Who do you work for again? China?

I work in politics. It was stated when I was hired that owning and operating a blog or a website would be a conflict of interest with my job. Its quite standard, and its something I chose voluntarily.

But, again, posting on this and other blogs every 15 minutes is OK according to this imaginary work contract, right?

    VA Blogger,

My issue with you isn't the fact that you don't have a blog. I don't have a blog. Millions of good Americans don't have blogs.

My issue is that your handle is something of a misnomer. You may be from Virginia. You may work for the Veteran's Administration. Your real name might be Victor Anfredjonsonton. So I'm not disputing the "VA" part. But surely to call yourself "VA Blogger" implies that you are a blogger.

Perhaps you should call yourself "VA Conservative Non-Blogger" "Nonblogger in NoVA" or "Blogless in Ballston"? But VA Blogger? Come on. That's stretching the bounds of truthiness.

    S2G, don't exaggerate.

Josh, point well taken, but I've gotten quite used to this handle, and its far too much effort for me to click a few buttons and come up with another one. Besides, this site and Kos is the only place left I'm known as Va Blogger. At SSP and MyDD, I'm "Unabridged". There's just no point in posting at Kos, though, when they get 1,000 comments in an hour.
